Workgroup Overview

This workgroup addressed the lack of standards for hotel IP phone systems, which allows hoteliers to have greater flexibility in choosing phone system components – both PBXs and handsets. Its goals were to enable effective enforcement of brand and chain standards despite dramatic changes in communication technology and products; to reduce support problems related to interoperability, vendor incompatibility and networking issues; and to provide hotels with improved choice and flexibility with respect to handset design and system functionality.

Workgroup Charter Outline

Business Problem

Assist hoteliers in realizing the maximum economic and service benefit from a Hospitality Specific Telephony Solution that supports Analog, Digital, and Voice over IP / IP telephony technologies. Create a set of specifications and a certification process that ensures that Manufacturers, Vendors, Consultants, and Integrators provide a Hospitality focused telephony solution that supports the requirements of the Hotelier.

Outcomes

  • SIP handsets which are certified to interoperate with certified IP PBXs.
  • An IP PBX that supports the basic set of SIP Features required for a Hospitality Environment.
  • IP PBXs (both premise-based and above-property) which offer some assurance that they meet the unique requirements of the hospitality industry.

Deliverables

  • Hospitality focused SIP interoperability Certification program
  • Second revision of IP PBX specification document (to include above-property solutions)
